Ice conditions: Ice is currently forming at many Utah waterbodies but may not yet have even thickness or safe access for ice fishing. Anglers should use extreme caution and be aware of best practices for ice safety.
Seasonal forecasts
Academy Mill Reservoir:
Fishing forecast (December through May): This high-elevation waterbody can be difficult to access for ice fishing. Deep snow can make this and other high-elevation waterbodies inaccessible to wheeled vehicles. An ice safety guide is available here. Generally, roads are clear and open by Memorial Day. Snow drifts may block access until mid-June 2024. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Benches Pond:
Fishing forecast (December through May): This high-elevation waterbody is a great location for ice fishing for some trout. An ice safety guide is available here. Winter access is not maintained to the parking lot and restroom. Ice often melts off in late May. As the snow melts and the reservoir fills, you can expect the water to be murky or muddy. Trout typically do not overwinter in this pond. Catchable-sized rainbow trout are stocked in the spring. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Blanding Reservoir No. 4:
Fishing forecast (December through March): In the winter, this waterbody typically is covered with some ice. Be careful when attempting to ice fish. An ice safety guide is available here. Catchable-sized rainbow trout, tiger trout and largemouth bass are in the water year-round. This and other bodies of water are stocked with fish by the end of May and in the fall. Water levels are typically lower in the fall. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Blue Lake:
Fishing forecast (December through May): This high-elevation waterbody can be difficult to access for ice fishing. An ice safety guide is available here. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Boulger Reservoir:
Fishing forecast (December through May): Winter access is not maintained to the parking lot and restroom. Ice often melts off in late May. As the snow melts and the reservoir fills, you can expect the water to be murky or muddy. Skyline Mine will be mining underneath the reservoir. Utah Dam Safety is requiring the lake to be drained while the undermining occurs. The lake will be drained and remain empty until fall 2024. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Carbon County Community Fishing Pond:
Fishing forecast (December through March): The county pond is closed during the winter. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Cleveland Reservoir:
Fishing forecast (December through May): This reservoir has been impacted by extreme drought conditions over the past few years. DWR suspended rainbow trout stocking in 2021 due to low water during the summer and fall. A few catchable-sized rainbow trout were stocked in the fall of 2022. These rainbows will be hungry and active at ice-off in late May. The full quota of rainbow trout were stocked in June 2023. (Dec. 4, 2023)

Fishing forecast (December through May): Safe ice usually forms on Huntington Reservoir by early December and lasts until late May. An ice safety guide is available here. Trout are very active right after ice-on and usually provide good to excellent fishing along the dam. Heavy fishing pressure eventually causes this fast fishing to slow down as some fish get less active and others move away from easily accessible areas. Tiger trout will stay in the shallows, while splake can be found in deeper water. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Huntington Creek:
Fishing forecast (December through March): Water levels are low and the creek is frozen. An ice safety guide is available here. This high-elevation canyon stream is great for catching brown and cutthroat trout. A wildfire and flooding in 2012 disrupted much of the fishing habitat. However, the trout population is beginning to recover and catchable fish (10-20 inches) can be found in deep holes. (Dec. 4, 2023)

We recommend using a piece of nightcrawler fished below a bobber, or trout dough bait fished off the bottom. Lures (such as inline spinners, casting spoons and marabou jigs) and streamers (such as Pistol Pete flies, woolly buggers and leech patterns) can also be effective. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Huntington North Reservoir:
Fishing forecast (December through May): Safe ice usually forms on Huntington North Reservoir by late December and lasts until late March. An ice safety guide is available here. Trout are very active right after ice-on and usually provide good to excellent fishing along the dam and boat ramp. Heavy fishing pressure eventually causes this fast fishing to slow down as some fish get less active and others move away from easily accessible areas. (Dec. 4, 2023)
Joes Valley Reservoir (Blue Ribbon):
Fishing forecast (December through March): Splake: Splake will be shallower this time of year. Try using dead Utah chub as bait to catch fish during this timeframe. Cut off a 1-by-1-inch piece of chub meat and thread it on a 1/8-ounce or 1/4-ounce jig head. Cast the bait out and let it sit on the bottom. Casting tube jigs and swimbaits tipped with chub meat will also work from shore. Keep your jig close to the bottom as you retrieve/reel, because most fish will hug the bottom. Other good lures to try will be silver and white or black and white spoons. Rainbow trout: Use standard trout-fishing tactics through the ice like worm and marshmallow/salmon egg, PowerBait and ice flies. Tiger muskie: Ice fishing for tiger muskie can be very difficult. Anglers occasionally catch one while targeting trout. Cutthroat trout: Cutthroat trout in the reservoir are self-sustaining and use the tributaries to spawn. Target cutthroat with similar tactics as splake. Use tube jigs tipped with chub. (Dec. 4, 2023)

Ice typically forms on the reservoir around the end of November. An ice safety guide is available hereTiger trout: Early morning fishing is key to target tiger trout. Tigers will cruise the shallow shoreline before daylight feeding on Utah chub. Utah chub will congregate to spawn in shallow rocky and weedy areas, and tiger trout will target the spawning chub as a food source. Try using dead Utah chub as bait to catch fish during this timeframe. Cut off a 1-by-1-inch piece of chub meat and thread it on a 1/8-ounce or 1/4-ounce jig head. Let the bait out and let it sit on the bottom. Tube jigs and swimbaits tipped with chub meat will also work. Keep your jig close to the bottom as you retrieve/reel, because most fish will hug the bottom. Other good lures to try will be silver and white, or black and white spoons. Cutthroat trout: Target cutthroat with similar tactics as tiger trout. Use tube jigs tipped with chub meat and crankbaits. Cutthroat can be found in shallow water later in early winter when water temperatures drop. Rainbow trout: This reservoir usually gets stocked in October for the last time for the year. Good fishing for rainbow trout is typical for this time of year. Use standard trout fishing tactics from shore like worm and marshmallow/salmon egg, PowerBait, ice flies and spoons. Tiger muskie: Ice fishing for tiger muskie can be very difficult.
