ONTARIO GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT LAKE NIPIGON BASIN

THUNDER BAY - The Ontario government is promoting sustainable development by unveiling a blueprint for balancing the environment and economic development in the magnificent Lake Nipigon Basin in northwestern Ontario, Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay announced today.

"Balancing the protection and sustainable use of the resources of this vast and unique area will contribute to a healthy, natural environment and strong, stable communities," said Ramsay. "Encouraging and supporting sustainable development of the area's resource-based industries, such as tourism and forestry, will contribute to new jobs and more diversified local economies."

The Lake Nipigon Basin Signature Site Ecological Land Use and Resource Management Strategy is the outcome of more than three years of public consultation. The strategy was developed with input from local and provincial interest groups, meetings with First Nations, the Lake Nipigon Watershed Advisory Committee and three rounds of open houses in four local communities.

"The magic of the Lake Nipigon Basin is ours to enjoy today. With the implementation of the basin strategy, it will be enhanced for the continued enjoyment and benefit of future generations," said Tim Carroll, a 25-year charterboat business owner on Lake Nipigon, who participated in the public consultation process.

More than 100 km from north to south and about 60 km wide, the Lake Nipigon Basin encompasses more than 800,000 hectares of wilderness. The area's spectacular scenery, waterways and natural ecosystems will be preserved in a network of protected areas totaling more than 247,000 hectares. Economic development and traditional activities will be allowed in six enhanced management areas within the Signature Site, with the requirement that the basin's important natural features and values be considered and maintained.

"By strengthening the communities in which we live, we are providing Ontarians with a quality of life that is second to none," said Ramsay.
