COLUMBUS, OH - Cutting costs doesn't mean you have to cut family fun. An Ohio fishing license is a cost-effective gift that makes it easy for dad and the whole family to relax at a nearby lake or stream.
<br>"Fishing is an inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors," said Dave Graham, chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. "Fishing in Ohio offers a great deal of variety and there's something to catch, close to home in every corner of the state."<br>
<br>Ohio fishing licenses are good March 1 through the last day of February. They can be purchased at outlets across the state or online. Look for the license sale link at wildohio.com.<br>
<br>The Division of Wildlife suggests that dad try theses fishing "hot spots" (by species):<br>
<br>WALLEYE- Lake Erie is still the "Walleye Capital of the World," providing the best walleye fishing in the region. Father's Day weekend should be outstanding for walleye in Lake Erie. Other locations to consider include: C.J. Brown Reservoir, Findlay Reservoir #2, Berlin Lake, LaDue Reservoir, and Mosquito Lake.<br>
<br>CRAPPIE- Crappies are fun to catch and good to eat. Top places around Ohio include Pymatuning Lake, Pleasant Hill Lake, Deer Creek Lake, Alum Creek Lake, Hoover Reservoir, Cowan Lake, Salt Fork, Seneca Lake, Indian Lake, and Paint Creek Lake.<br>
<br>BLUEGILL- There's good bluegill (and other sunfish) fishing throughout the state. Some of the best spots are the AEP ReCreation Land south of Zanesville, La Su An Wildlife Area, Hargus Lake, Ross Lake, Wellington South and Wellington Upground Reservoirs, Lake Loramie, and the Portage Lakes in Akron.<br>
<br>SAUGEYE- June is a top saugeye fishing month. Some of Ohio's best saugeye waters are Atwood Lake, Tappan Lake, Pleasant Hill Lake, Alum Creek Lake, Indian Lake, Salt Fork Lake, Seneca Lake, and Buckeye Lake.<br>
<br>LARGEMOUTH BASS- The AEP ReCreation Land is hard to beat for largemouth. Other good spots are Kokosing Lake, Knox Lake, Ferguson Reservoir, Acton Lake, Rocky Fork, Lake Milton, and Dow Lake, Pymatuning Lake, Tycoon Lake, East Harbor State Park, and the Portage Lakes.<br>
<br>PERCH- Lake Erie is still a desirable destination for perch fishing. Perch can be caught from shore and from piers offshore in the Cleveland area, as well as in Lorain, Huron, Fairport Harbor, Metzger Pier, the Bass Islands, and off Vermilion.<br>
<br>CATFISH- Channel catfish can be caught in all of Ohio's 88 counties. Some spots to try are Rocky Fork Lake, Delaware Reservoir, Charles Mill Reservoir, Clendening Lake, Caesar Creek Lake, Grand Lake St. Marys, and the Ohio River and its tributaries.<br>
